The UK Government launched the revolutionary program the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in 2014, this scheme was designed to incentivise the uptake of using biomass fuels to replace fossil fuels to carbon neutral fuels such as wood chip and wood pellet fuels thus reducing CO2 emissions. The RHI offered 20 years Indexed linked contracts for the period of the scheme.
The RHI Scheme was heralded as revolutionary, but only eight years on, for many, the dream of heating with a completely renewable resource has turned into a nightmare, as inferior systems begin to pass their useful life, with more than a decade left in some of the original contracts.
But, as they say, necessity is the mother of all invention, and so one Irish company Meridian Vortex Ltd has taken to helping those with their biomass boiler needs.

One important element of a biomass boiler is the combustion zone. This should be designed to combust the fuel at the highest efficiency and with minimal emissions. This is not always the case as with many combustion zones which are consumed as part of the boiler and can over the years create problems that will deteriorate components and decrease boiler efficiency and life span. Having accumulated significant experience from working in this sector we have developed a unique technology for burning biomass fuels. Each one of our products is the result of science, intensive research, experience and hard work.
Our product has been put through a rigorous testing process with emphasis on such values such as durability, safety, reliability, craftsmanship and longevity, this in turn rises operational reliability to a new level. One of the unique features of our Twig e-Grate it can be adapted to new boiler and retrofitted to old boilers that are unable to provide proper combustion due to detrition in the current combustion zone.
The e-Grate design ensures absolute combustion with low emissions with a high degree of efficiency even with variable fuel characteristics. The geometric design of the combustion chamber facilitates adequate retention time for clean and efficient combustion of the fuel. The e-Grate design allows material to move through the following different combustion sequences thereby the fuel goes through drying stage- Degasification – Burnout – Cooling – and finally post combustion gases are exited into the atmosphere.
The combustion zone is fully lined with has been designed to ensure complete combustion of the fuel with decreased energy loss caused by incomplete combustion of gases and carbon particles.
The combustion chamber is fully lined with high quality refectory and which is an equal important element for good combustion environment.
